Re:new music
The project refers to the living composers' artistic need to develop and diffuse their repertoire - and to be in an active dialogue with their European colleagues. We believe this can be done through a collaborative platform where composers, existing ensembles, professonal music promotors like music information centres, festivals and concert producers within the European music scene can act in synergy.
The basic idea is to develop a permanent and ever expanding framework of meeting places and exchange. This pilot describes concrete projects for circulating contemporary music between a larger audience in tight collaboration within the circle of composers, performers and producers. Further on, it suggests an organizational model of sharing knowledge on an artistic as well as infrastructural levels. The repertoire should focus on acting as a support-and developmental programme mainly for unestablished composers in Europe, and further on with a long-term goal of strengthening the knowledge, engagement and public awareness of today's art music.
The basic principle of this pilot project is defined as exchange, taking place on four general levels:
- The exchange of existing repertoire. This is an exchange that takes place between ensembles throughout Europe with the pilot structure as a common platform. Each participating ensemble is invited to suggest 8 pieces of high artistic quality and different artistic approach written by composers of their region.
- Exchange of detailed information concerning the exchanged repertoire, for instance: estimate of rehearsal time (to make productions more efficient), general and specific reactions to the work of music in question (from musicians, audiences and critics). This will constitute an important - and new - way of documenting the work with the repertoire, that will be interesting also to ensembles that do not directly participate in the project.
- Exchange of infrastructural knowledge, i.e. exchange of specific information concerning the structure of regional music scenes. For example: who to contact when ensemble X wishes to plan a tour in country Y? What venues would be interested in this specific production? What kind of travel grants are applicable for each specific co-operation?
- Exchange of project ideas with no direct link to the ensemble size. This is considered a natural spin-off effect of the pilot itself, mixing creators, performers and music promoters in Europe, the pilot will encourage to develop new project ideas specially focused on audience development.
Activities during the project period are:
- workshops (including rehearsals and residencies) ensembles and composers leading to concerts,
- circulation of repertoire
- platform meetings (composers, ensembles, producers)
- promotion
- website
